Beaches & water sports

Reef-calmed swimming, one of Sri Lanka's busiest water-sports scenes, and quieter sand further south.

Three stretches, three moods

Bentota's coastline changes character as you move along it — lively and sport-focused near the river mouth, calmer and more residential heading south.

Beach safety tips

  • Swim at beaches with lifeguards where possible, and only within marked zones
  • Currents strengthen away from the main reef-protected bay — ask locally before swimming further out
  • Water sports are generally calmer November–April; conditions are rougher during the south-west monsoon (June–Sept)
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid touching coral or marine life
  • Book water sports operators with visible safety equipment and life jackets
